Dear Sir or Madam
Language is a living entity that is constantly changing. Words disappear without a trace, new ones take their place. We decided to take a look at linguistic developments in the classic German dictionary: the Duden. Making their début in the 2020 edition are terms such as social distancing and WhatsApp group as well as a fascinating, word that English speakers would have to render as "decline in the insect population" along with around 3,000 other terms. We’ve taken a look at some of this year’s new entries in more detail.

Do things sometimes sound a little out of tune when the family gets together under the Christmas tree to sing everyone’s favourite carols? Don’t worry, we’re not about to start giving singing lessons in the newsletter. Instead, we are taking you on a journey into the past and will be telling you about where some of the most famous carols come from. We hope these wonderful Christmas stories will enchant you.

Vanessa Dünki is a project manager at Apostroph’s Zurich office. In an interview, she tells us about her work with the customers, what it is like to swim through fog and what exactly the problem is with her fingers.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the winter and the holiday season in good health.

All the best

New times, new words
If you look at the new entries in this year’s Duden, it’s like being on a verbal roller coaster. There are words that (unfortunately) have become familiar to us in a short period of time, others that make us stop and think, as well as terms that make us smile. We would like to introduce 35 new terms to the classic German work of reference.

The cradles of the most famous Christmas carols
Nights over the Christmas period are rarely silent, as singing Christmas carols is still as much a part of the festivities as Santa Claus, the Christ Child and the tree. From Mario Lanza through Elvis Presley and Nina Hagen to Justin Bieber, countless stars have interpreted these classic melodies. But who exactly wrote the carols and their lyrics?

Interview with our project manager Vanessa Dünki
Wordbee, water and whirlwinds
Not even the new Duden dictionary knows about Wordbee and World Server, but they are part of the daily routine for our project manager Vanessa. In the interview, she explains how that works. But she also talks about how she takes a look at life under Lake Zurich and why she has so much fun with excited children.
